The Great Awakening occurred from the 1730s to 1770s. The religious community of the Puritans, Congregationalists, Catholics, and Anglicans were known as the old lights. The new lights were converts during the Great Awakening, such as the Baptists and Methodists. For the first time, African Americans and Indians were drawn to Protestism. They developed the idea that worshipping God could be done by attending Mass and listening to sermons. The African Americans and Native Americans were highly concerned about evangelizing, but this boosted the esteem of women in America. Women were praised for having such a strong Christian piety. Those of the higher profile helped guide churches, minister church members, and brought forth the religious messages to the unconverted. As a result of the Great Awakening religion was democratized.
