He had 5 hearts when he fought Naruto's cell in shippipuden. He lost two hearts by Kakashi's lighning blade, one heart by his partner, Hidan, (Shikamaru tricked him), and two from Naruto's fuuton Rasen Shuriken. That is how he dies.
