The Olympic cauldron was scheduled to be ignited by four notable Canadians at Vancouver, They included NHL player Wayne Gretzky, Senator Nancy Greene, OC, OBC, OD, speed skater Catriona Le May Doan and Basketball All Star Steve Nash. A malfunction of the hydraulic system prevented a perfect display. Gretsky also lit an exterior display to comply with Olympic regulations.
There were many features in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in the year 2008. The centerpiece of the opening ceremony was the lighting of the grand Olympic torch.

On the 22nd of November 2010, the Vancouver 2010 Torch relay will past through Charlottetown, Prince Edward Islandand Summerside, Prince Edward Island.It's the 25th day of its journey in Canada (the torch will arrive at the BC Place Stadium for the opening ceremony on the 12th of February, 2010).

The torch is initially lit, by the Sun's rays that are concentrated by a mirror, at a ceremony in Olympia, Greece several months in advance of an Olympics. The relay then takes the torch to the site of the Olympics where the cauldron is lit with it.
