Melees Zenawi was the Prime Minister (PM) of Ethiopia, from 1995-2012. Zenawi was a controversial figure, to say the least. Often accused of being a strongman, Zenawi was accused of violating human rights and political repression, but was also responsible for allowing a multi-party political system to develop.

He also presided over the civil war with what would become the nation of Eritrea, and led a major invasion of Somalia aimed at fighting the Islamist group al-Shabaab in that country. His anti-Islamist stance made him an ally of the United States in the "War on Terror". The period of Zenawi's rule marked a move away from the partly state-run economy of Cold War Ethiopia, and saw economic growth.

Overall, a controversial man, but for better or worse, extremely important in African politics.
