The people protesting in Ukrainian cities are anti-governent protesters. They were voting to drive out President Viktor Yanukovych, as many people resented his choosing an alliance with Russia over an alliance with the European Union. Moreover he was (rightly, as it turned out) suspected of embezzling and misappropriating huge sums of Government money.
For three months anti-government protesters have been in a fight between the anti-government protesters and police. On the 18th of Febuary the fighting intensified with policemen being shot at by protesters. These protesters are ethnic Ukrainians. There are indications that at least some of them have connections with right wing extremist Ukrainian groups.
As of April, 2014 the most active protesters have been mainly Russians and Ukraine citizens of Russian descent living in the eastern provinces of the Ukraine, demanding that these provinces be joined in some form with Russia. Active covert involvement of the Russian government is suspected here.
