it depends on culture. some cultures would have men pay so that they would look wealthy and able to easily support the women, whille others would have the women's family pay so that she would be willing to leave her home if she knew that he had money and the man would have anough money from the wedding to support the wife. so it depends on culture and time. in most western areas this tradition has fallen out and if it is not traditional then it would be viewed as strange.
