Thomas Jefferson figured out how to harness electricity and make it useful but his system was "direct" current. Meanwhile a fellow named Westinghouse was developng a safer and more reliable method of delivering electricity. He gave us "alternating" current which is what we use in almost all applications like our homes, traffic lights and so on. Direct current is still used in cars but because it has limited adaptability on a larger scale it is not used very often.
