First introduced in the 1986 animated movie, Hot Rod is a young Autobot with a brash, self-confident personality which often bordered on arrogance and he also acted as a brother figure to Daniel Witwicky. During the Battle of Autobot City, he attempted to help Optimus Prime as he engaged in combat with Megatron but the latter used him as a shield and fatally wounded Optimus.

The Decepticons retreated as the Autobots returned to their headquarters and attempted to save their leader. In his weakened state, Optimus decided to pass the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus, who refused to accept it. Optimus dropped the Matrix and it was caught by Hot Rod, who handed it to Ultra Magnus.

When the Autobots landed on the planet Junk (also known as Junkion), Hot Rod greeted the Junkions using the universal greeting. They came under attack by the Decepticons, now led by Galvatron (reformatted from Megatron), and Ultra Magnus was killed. Although Galvatron took the Matrix and fled the Junkions managed to repair Ultra Magnus.

After escaping from Junk in a Quintesson ship, the Autobots crashed through Unicron's eye and were thrown from the ship. FInding himself separated from the other Autobots, Hot Rod ran into Galvatron, who told him that the Matrix couldn't be opened. Hot Rod said it couldn't be done by a Decepticon and they engaged in combat with Galvatron taking several shots at him. He transformed into vehicle mode but Galvatron apprehended him and he had no choice but to revert to robot mode.

As Galvatron attempted to choke him to death, Hot Rod grabbed the Matrix from around Galvatron's neck and as he raised it Optimus' voice said "Arise, Rodimus Prime" and he grew several feet taller and adopted a sterner demeanour. Using his newfound strength, he managed to overpower Galvatron, ejecting him from Unicron's hull. He opened the Matrix further and told it to "light our darkest hour", which caused Unicron to start ripping apart.

Confused by what was happening, the other Autobots along with Spike and Daniel attempted to escape and Daniel saw Rodimus running towards them. Rodimus ordered the other Autobots to "transform and roll out" and Kup said that he knew he had potential as a leader as all of them escaped through Unicron's unbroken eye. As Unicron proclaimed that they couldn't destroy his destiny, he exploded.

With the Autobots gathered together, Rodimus declared that it should mark the end of the Cybertronian Wars and that they should all unite.

However, in the aftermath of the movie's events, Rodimus would continually doubt his leadership skills as he felt inferior to Optimus and when Optimus was resurrected and several Transformers, including Rodimus, were infected by the Hate Plague, Optimus managed to retrieve the Matrix and used it to cure the infected Transformers. Rodimus reverted to Hot Rod and Optimus resumed his role as leader of the Autobots.
