The French came to colonize North America in the 1500s and throughout the centuries that followed, just like the British. In fact, much of what is today Canada was once New France. The first French voyage to Canada with an eye to colonization was in 1534, led by Jacques Cartier.
1524
Francisco Pizarro left for his journey to explore South America in 1524. He made his first expedition to the region with the intention of finding the riches of the Inca Empire. After a series of challenges, he returned to Spain and organized a more successful expedition, which ultimately led to his conquest of the Inca Empire in 1532.
Francisco Pizarro sailed through various months during his expeditions to South America, notably during his first voyage in 1524-1526. He set sail from Spain in November 1524 and returned in 1526. His significant expedition leading to the conquest of the Inca Empire began in 1531, with his forces landing in Peru in the spring months of 1532.
Francisco Pizarro's first notable expedition to the New World began in 1509 when he joined an expedition to the coast of present-day Colombia. Pizarro later ventured to Peru in 1524, where he explored the region and established contact with indigenous populations. His initial routes primarily focused on the northern coasts of South America, laying the groundwork for his subsequent conquests of the Inca Empire.
Britain and France
Giovanni da Verrazzano was sponsored by France. In 1524, he was commissioned by King Francis I to explore the eastern coast of North America. His expedition aimed to find a westward route to the Pacific and to establish French claims in the New World. Verrazzano is best known for being one of the first Europeans to explore the Atlantic coast of North America, including areas that are now part of modern-day New York.
