Officially, it wasn't hers but her husbands throne. Her father was emperor Charles VI and she was born after her brother (the future emperor) had died. Charles VI never had another son. It was decided, since it was not done to have a woman reign the country, that her husband would be emperor, though he never effectively executed any reign, his wife, Maria Theresa did, becoming the first woman to reign a European country.
