The Governor General exercises most of the Queen's functions as head of State (some functions, however, are exclusively exerciseable by the Sovereign). The Governor General is appointed by the Queen, on the advice of the prime minister (the head of Government), and serves at Her Majesty's pleasure. Presently, the Governor General is Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean. (Mr. David Johnston is the Governor General-designate, and is set to be appointed on 1 October 2010.)
