Del Rio cashed in his Money In The Bank contract at SummerSlam on CM Punk after the match Punk had against John Cena with COO Triple H to find out who would be the Undisputed WWE Champion since both Cena and Punk were holding the title and after Kevin Nash gave Punk the Jacknife Powerbomb. Cena was holding the title because he won it from Rey Mysterio. Punk was holding the title because he walked out of Money In The Bank the WWE Champion. The reason they had a tournament to find out who would be the new WWE Champion is because Punk's contract expired at MITB, but he came back after Cena's match against Mysterio.
Cena became the number one contender for the WWE Championship after he beat Punk. Punk was close to winning the match, but Kevin Nash, who, according to the VP of Talent Relations, was in a car accident after Triple H told him to leave the arena. Cena will face Del Rio at the Night of Champions pay-per-view.
