Jonathan Edwards spoke during the period of enlightenment. Essentially, this period was known as a time when people began to reject certain ideas in religion because science could prove against it. Many people became less orthodox about religion. The Great Awakening also occurred due to the enlightenment. This was people trying to deny the enlightenment and continue the belief system they had carried out prior to the vast knowledge that science and philosophical thinking granted. Jonathan Edwards was a puritan and a devout Calvinist. He was very extreme and in this sermon, he discusses gods power and his goal was to scare people into being god's servants. He says if you do not serve god, you will be sent to hell. His audience, I would then say, were mostly puritans of the 17th century, hoping to be reassured in the existence of god and the more orthodox Catholic belief system.
