I've played the game twice, with Snivy and Oshowatt. They have their ups and downs, but they are far easier to use than Tepig, who my friend has and says (an exact quote:) "It's impossible to beat some of these gyms and it's so SLOW!"
So, Snivy or Oshowatt. If you have a friend who has played the game already and has the opposite starter you want of the two, ask them to go Giant Chasm and find a Ditto. Then, they can breed the opposite starter you got. (Picked Snivy, get Oshowatt. Picked Oshowatt, get Snivy.) Try to evenly level them up. With the two of them on your side, nothing is impossible.
