The Navajo tribe has an elected President and vice president. Currently that is, Ben Shelly and Vice president Rex Lee Jim.

Historically the Navajo had powerful and respected men who were leaders but no "chief " in the sense the English word means.

Traditionally there was a council of sorts with 12 "peace leaders" and 12 war leaders" . However, the Navajo have a more extreme belief in the importance of individual autonomy and therefor no leaders with the power to order people around or inherited chieftainship.
