The Cameroons were originally ruled by Germany, who claimed the territory during the European 'Scramble for Africa' in the late 19th Century. Following WW1, the Cameroons were awarded to Britain and France as part of German war reparations. France and Britain divided the area between them, with the French section becoming known as Cameroun, and the British section being itself partitioned into two halves, Northern Cameroon (which was mainly Muslim) and Southern Cameroon (mainly Christian). Cameroun became independent in 1960; the British held a referendum in both Northern and Southern Cameroons later the same year, which resulted in Northern Cameroon becoming unifed with the newly independent Nigeria early in '61, and Southern Cameroon unifying with Cameroun, to become the new nation of Cameroon.
