Rama's father Dasharatha had given a word to his third wife Kaikayee that he would fulfill her wish. By established practice then, Rama the eldest son was heir to the kingdom. Dasharatha had decided to crown Rama as king. However Kaikayee wanted her son Bharata to be king and hence she asked for her wish that her son Bharata be crowned instead of Rama and Rama to go in exile for 14 years. This Rama had to leave his father and home.
