No African American comedian has ever won an Oscar for Best Actor. The four Best Actor winners were Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx and Forest Whitaker. Foxx isn't really considered a comedian. Eddie Murphy was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for Dreamgirls, but he lost to Alan Arkin (because Norbit came out before that year's Oscars); however, Whoopi Goldberg is a comedian, and she won an Oscar for Ghost, but she didn't win Best Actor. She won Best Supporting Actress.

Whoopi Goldberg was the fifth African American to win an Oscar. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing Oda Mae Brown in Ghost (1990). Whoopi Goldberg is an accomplished comedian. The four African Americans which preceeded her to Oscar glory were: Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier, Louis Gossett, Jr. and Denzel Washington (not comedians). Ms. Goldberg had previously been nominated for Best Actress in 1985 for her role as Celie in The Color Purple.
