If you choose Snivy(grass) you will face fire type pokemon. If you want to beat them, go to the right corner of the town and go into the dream yard. Go to the girl at the end and she will give you a pansage(grass) if you have Tepig, panpour(water) if you have Snivy and pansear(fire) if you have Oshawott.
The gym leader will first send out a plain normal type followed by your pokemon's weakness.
