When Hades abducted Persephone to the underworld her mother Demeter grieved. Demeter is the goddess of crops and harvest. When she missed her daughter she could not fulfil her duties, so nothing grew on earth. Then it was arranged that Persephone was to come back to her mother for part of the year. When she is, her mother is happy. That is the cause of our seasons.
There is no greek god of winter, but the greek god of the coldest wind (which is made in winter) is Boreas, god of the north wind. Apparently, he is the most "nice" wind god there is.
Boreas god of the north wind and winter, Khione (snow) was his daughter or consort, and Kheimon (the Horai of winter personified).
The seasons - this includes winter - are caused by the tilt of Earth's axis.
In Greek mythology, Demeter, the goddess of harvest and agriculture, is often associated with the changing seasons. When her daughter Persephone was taken by Hades to the underworld, Demeter's grief caused her to neglect her duties, leading to the barren winter months.

God made it that way.
The thing that the Greeks believed caused winter is when Demeter, goddess of the harvest, was sad becase Persephone was in the underworld with her husband Lord Hades. Because Demeter was sad, nothing grew and the weather worsened, thus the Greeks had an explanation for winter.
