I would say it has to be Chuck Todd or David Gregory. It can't be Keith Olberman. Tom Brokaw is going to host the tribute show on this Sunday, but I don't think he's tough enough to do it continuously. So, I'd say Todd or Gregory.

Tim Russert
Tim Russert was the permanent host of Meet the Press from 1991 until his sudden death in June 2008. After several temporary hosts (including Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw), David Gregory was chosen in December 2008. Debuting in 1947, Meet the Press is the longest running show in broadcasting history. (Its very first host was a woman, the show's creator and co-producer, Martha Rountree.)
The duration of Meet the Press is 1800.0 seconds.
Meet the Press was created on 1947-11-06.
YES, Meet the Press began on radio in 1945 as American Mercury Presents: Meet the Press.
First, Tim Russert is deceased; he died suddenly in 2008, and obviously has not been hosting Meet the Press in a while; the current host is David Gregory. Mr. Russert, by most accounts, was a conservative Democrat, who tended to lean right on issues related to the military. I don't know what you mean by "Niagara Hawkish," but I do know that Meet the Press had many viewers, and Mr. Russert was widely respected.
Meet the Press - 1947 was released on: USA: 6 November 1947
The first athlete to appear on Meet The Press was Jackie Robinson on April 14, 1967.
