The original rulers of Tekkali belonged to the Kadamba dynasty. In 1797 AD the last ruler Ramakrushna Jagadev died issueless therefore the estate was taken over by the East India Company, under the doctrine of lapse, and was declared as a haveli estate. It was later purchased in 1817 by Rajah Jagat Ballav Deb, of Paralakhemundi for his brother, Padmanabh Gajapati. Padmanabh Gajapati died in 1832 in Paralakhemundi at the age of 51. After the death of Padmanabh Gajapathi, the estate was divided between his two sons. Gopinath Deb ruled Tekkali and Krushna Chandra over Nandigram. Gopinath Deb the Zamindar of Tekkali married Radhika Patamahadevi, the daughter of the Maharajah of Patnagarh. He had only three daughters: Ratnamala, Muktamala and Manikyamala. Ratnamala was married to the Rajah of Dompoda in Sambalpur District of Orissa. Muktamala married Rajah Chaitanya Chandra of Athagarh in 1873 and Manikyamala married Rajkumar Joginder Bhupati Mohapatro of Sukinda. Gopnath Deb died in 1852. Radhika Pattamahadebi, the widow of Gopinath ruled the estate. In 1875 Rajah Chaitanya Chandra of Athagarh died. At that time Muktamala was pregnant. In 1876 she gave birth to a son, who was named as Brundavan Chandra. Radhika Mahadebi took her newly born grand son on a golden plate and placed him on the empty throne. Thus Brundavan Chandra from the day of his birth became the Rajah of Tekkali. Radhika Patamahadevi died in 1893. Ratnamala predeceased her mother. Manikyamala died in June 1909 and Muktamala in September 1909. After the death of Brundavan Chandra the estate was divided between his two sons: Laksminarayan Harichandan, the senior zamindar and Gopnath Harichandan, the junior zamindar. Lakshminarayan was succeeded by Govind Chandra, who was in turn succeeded by Durga Sankar Prasad Deb. Gopinath was succeeded by his two sons Madhusudan Harichandan and Jaganath Harichandan. Jaganath Harichandan died in 1984 leaving two sons: Kundendu Kumar and Subhendu Kumar and two daughters. Madhusudan Harichandan Jagadeb is the last surving zamindar of Tekkali, who was the ruler at the time of vesting OS the Tekkali estate after independence. He has two sons Jujutshu Kumar and Lalit Kumar (Principal, Lingaraj Law College, Berhampur) and three daughters.
