Jacob broke away from the pack to go off on his own, to protect Bella and the Cullens. Seth follows, and later Leah. They become a separate "pack," although Jacob still refuses to use his Alpha power to lead them or tell them what to do. By the end of the series, Embry and Quil have joined Jacob's pack, while Sam leads Jared, Paul, Collin, Brady, and six other, younger wolves in his own original pack. Sam and Jacob, both being Alphas, can communicate with each other through their thoughts, while the rest of the packs minds are separate from the other (although the ability to share thoughts within the pack(s) still remains).
