William G. Morgan (a YMCA physical education director) created volleyball February 9th 1895 in Massachusetts.
William Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 at a YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Morgan was the Director of Physical Education at the YMCA and needed a sport that could satisfy older members. Basketball was recently invented at the time and younger individuals took to that sport. He wanted to create something that wasn't as potentially violent and less intensive. Morgan combined charactaristics from tennis, handball, and basketball and called it 'Mintonette', which was later renamed 'volleyball.'
