According to The Street Book: An Encyclopedia of Manhattan's Street Names and Their Origins, by Henry Moscow, Chambers Street was named after, "John Chambers, lawyer, corporation counsel, alderman and Supreme Court judge between 1727 and his death, about 1765.
"Chambers and another lawyer, Joseph Murray, were commended by the Common Council and given the freedom of the city in 1728 after they had returned fees of $5 each, paid them for legal work on the Council's behalf."
