Currently, there is no Captain (taichou) leading the ninth squad. Former taichous include Kensei Muguruma and Kaname Tōsen.
Kensei Muguruma was betrayed by Tōsen, his former fifth seat, under the orders of Aizen 101 years previous to the current storyline. This was revealed in the Turn Back the Pendulum miniseries. Tōusen made him begin the hollowfication process. However, thanks to Urahara's quick thinking, the process halted and he is now a Vaizard living in Karakura Town.
Kaname Tōusen became taichou in Kensei's stead and vacated the position once Aizen's true desires were revealed in Soul Society. He currently resides in Hueco Mundo.
