Dr. Werhner Von Braun was a key scientist on the V1/V2 rocket programs for the Nazis in WWII. When it became apparent that the Russians were getting close to their location, he and his team made the decision to surrender to the Allies, knowing that their knowledge would be used for good in the west as opposed to if it fell into Russian hands. Many other rocket scientists were in fact captured by the Russians, but Von Braun's team surrendered to the Allies, and he and others eventually came to the United States.

It was Von Braun who was the chief architect of successfully getting the U.S. Space Program off the ground. He succeeded in designing the rockets that took the Mercury, Gemini astronauts into space, and the Saturn V rocket that took us to the Moon.
