One real mystery is the lead character, the Time Traveller remains nameless. This is true in the entire narrative of the book. It is mildly disturbing such a pivotal character would remain anonymous. He is not a Superhuman being or Deity, so I wonder why this was done. Anonymity, among other things frustrates meaningful dialogue and adds a heavy nebulous fog of phoniness ( liek the characters in Wizard of oz who have descriptive names rather than real names.) I don"t like this literary device, unless of course, it is a guessing game where one has to guess the character if he is a historical personage. ( This was done with (The Pilot) the namless character, nautical not air pilot, was based on probably John Paul Jones or another Naval officer of the period. again it is not a good idea.
