All historians seem to agree on five
Other possible or probable victims were:
Edit: What was so specific about the known five was that they were all prostitutes of Whitechapel. Frederick Abberline from Scotland Yard was the chief inspector in the case, starting in 1888.
There was another prostitute named Emily Dimmont that was murdered in 1902 and she is included by some historians. I believe she was in fact a Ripper victim. There are only 3 reasons why a serial killer stops killing. One, they got caught. Two, they moved out of the area, they are just killing somewhere else. and Three, they are dead. With the Ripper, he just kept killing until he got too old. I think because the papers stop printing everything 'Ripper' people assumed he was gone.
The killer known as Jack The Ripper has never been identified, at least to the point of little remaining doubt. It is possible that JTR could have been killed, but just as likely that he died of natural causes. At this point it would be only speculation as to the identity of the Ripper, and further speculation as to how he met his demise.
The controversy continues as to whom Jack The Ripper killed first. Where once Mary Ann Nichols was believed to be the first victim it is more likely the killings begain before Nichols' August 31, 1888 death. Martha Tabram, an east end prostitute, was found murdered on August 7, 1888. Tabram's body was found near George Yard buildings, Commercial Street, Spitalfields. She had sustained 39 separate stab wounds. The 'overkill' was seen with all Ripper victims with the exception of Elizabeth Stride.* Prostitute Emma Smith was attacked April 3, 1888, and died a short time later of her injuries. Her name comes up as a possible Ripper victim but she was attacked by several men and lived long enough to tell her story. As far as anyone knows, JTR worked alone and left no living victims.
*Elizabeth Stride's body was found September 30 on Burner St., Whitechapel. Unlike the Ripper's other victims, Stride had only a slit throat, but only because the killer was interrupted by a man with a pony cart. Unsatisfied, the Ripper killed Catherine Eddows less than an hour later. Eddows wasn't as lucky as Stride. She was mutilated almost beyond recognition.
Jack The Ripper is what is known as a serial killer. The FBI defines serial killer as a killer that kills at least 3 times, but separate kills, with a 'cooling off' period in between each kill. The cooling off period can be different with each killer. There is usually an exceleration of the crimes as time goes by, sometimes the cooling off period will get shorter between kills.
The crimes of Jack The Ripper were sexually motivated, the victims sexual organs repeatedly stabbed and cut. The Ripper displayed both organized and un-organized characteristics. This is not uncommon to have a mix of both present in killers.
The way that some of the victims faces were hacked and cut to the extent of them being almost unrecoginzable was the Ripper's way to de-humanize these women. He wanted to destroy even that aspect of them.
Unfortunately, the case never got to the point where there was just a single suspect. There were no serious leads and virtually anybody could find themselves a suspect. The man known as 'Leather Apron', John Pizer, found himself on the wrong side of a vigilante group and actually needed police protection temporarily, to avoid being strung up by an angry mob. His only sin, a leather apron. The fact that he was a bootmaker in the east end who had a legitiment reason to posess such an apron mattered not to the good people of London. Other suspects at the time were Montegue John Driutt, Aaron Kozmiski and Michael Ostrog.
As the decades past, and the case found no resolution, the number of suspects grew to the hundreds. And the crimes of an unknown man who called himself Jack The Ripper grew to almost mythic proportion.
