There are no portraits of anyone or paintings of animals, as this may cause the Muslim to worship the painting instead of God. There are no statues or 'idols' for the same reason. To decorate the mosque there is patterns and often photo's/paintings of the great mosque's such as the Kabbah in Mecca. Also Muslims decorate the mosque with Scripture from the Qu'ran. In richer countries there is often a decorative carpet. Mosque's are, overall, quite plain though.

Depending on what country you find yourself you will find some Mosques are very ornate and some are very simple. The blue Mosque in Turkey is a great example of the history that Mosques can represent, The blue Mosque was designed by a Muslim architect and the first structure to bear a domed roof. Over the centuries The building became a church and then was restored as a Mosque. when they went to restore the ceiling they discovered the ceiling had been ornately painted by the christians and they decided to leave it alone as it was beautiful. to my knowledge it is the only Mosque on earth to bear a likeness of any thing or anyone living. Images are stricly forbidden in Islam. this prohibition inspired the artists of the world to create mosaic designs, calligraphy and the other beautiful oriental art peices you find around the world and in Museums.

What does the little decoration in mosques tell us about the importance of Allah in Muslim lives?

Allah is the main thing, when in a Mosque or place of worship to Allah ones mind should be kept clear and focused to the worship of Allah alone. A mosque is kept simple and no photos or decorations are in front of the worshipper so that they do not start thinking of other things and loose concentration on their prayers.
