1497 john Cabot arrives in Newfoundland from England
Although Newfoundland had many European settlers between the time John Cabot discovered the island in 1497, includng English, French and Portuguese, and 1583 when Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed Newfoundland as a British colonny, it was John Guy who brought colonists over from England in 1610 to establish a permenant settlement. By 1620 Newfoundland was firmly established as a colony of England. Cheers Malcolm peace out!!!

There is no clear record of exactlywhere Cabot landed when he arrived in the new world. Some historians think it was as far north as Labrador and others think it was as far south as New England. Most historians, however, think Cabot landed on the Isle of Newfoundland, and probably at Bonavista.
By 1497, North America was already known to the world, having been discovered years earlier. However, in 1497, John Cabot (Giavanni Caboto), from Venice, discovered Newfoundland and claimed it for the English crown.
In 1497, Italian-born John Cabot sailed from England to North America, looking for a northern route to Asia. Accounts vary on where he landed; most likely it was the coast of Newfoundland, Labrador or Cape Breton.
