His father served in the Vermont legislature and held various local offices, so Coolidge had an early exposure to government and politics. He earned his living as a lawyer and that naturally led him into politics, starting with the school board, the city council and mayor, and continuing into state legislature, the lieutenant governor position. and finally governor of Mass. He became active in the national Republican Committee and was nominated for vice-president in 1920, won and became President when Harding died. I do not think he ever thought much about being President until he was rather surprisingly nominated for vice-president and even then probably not much because Harding was rather young and seemed to be in good health.
