The second and third expeditions of Captain John C. Fremont in 1843 and 1844 are credited with ascertaining that the Great Basin has no outlet. However, previous explorations, especially those by by Peter Skene Ogden and Jedediah Strong Smith, found the dry alkali flats which suggested to them that the basin has no outlet for water runoff from the mountains in at least some parts of the area. The Great Salt Lake was regarded by some early trappers as a closed basin despite the persistent rumors of a great river, the Buenaventura, that flowed to the ocean.
