Sir Walter Raleigh raised money and led the first voyage to Roanoke in 1585. He obtained a charter from Queen Elizabeth I to establish a colony in the New World, which resulted in the establishment of the Roanoke Colony in present-day North Carolina. Raleigh was instrumental in organizing the expedition, although he did not personally travel on the initial voyage. The colony ultimately struggled to survive and was later abandoned.

Christopher Columbus led the first voyage to circumnavigate the globe in 1492. He never made it around the world as he landed in the Americas, thinking it was India.
Christopher Columbus is often credited with proving that the world is round during his famous voyage in 1492, although the concept of a round Earth was already known in ancient times by scholars like Pythagoras and Aristotle. Columbus's journey, which he thought would lead him to Asia but instead led him to the Americas, helped to further confirm the spherical shape of the Earth.
