The mission (also known as Mission Carmel) was established in 1770 and moved to its current location in 1771. It was the favorite mission of its founder, Father Junipero Serra who lived there and made it his headquarters. When he died in 1784, Serra was intombed underneath its floors..so I guess he still lives there.

The Esselen and Ohlone Indians of the area lived and worked at the mission too.
