In 1869, John Wesley Powell led the group that became the first to successfully explore and map the Colorado River. He was also the first head of the US Geological Survey 4. The state and the river both derive their names from the Spanish for red. The river used to have a reddish-brown color, but now the silt and sediment that gave it the color is trapped behind Glen Canyon Dam at the bottom of Lake Powell. 5. The river begins in the Rocky Mountains and flows into the Gulf of California (in Mexico) 6. All these territories have rights to the river under the Colorado River Pact of 1922 9. The Hoover Dam was the first of a series of dams to be built on the river back in 1931 10. 87% of the water leaving Colorado flows out of the Colorado river basin toward the Pacific Ocean. The remaining 13 percent of the water leaving Colorado flows out of the Missouri, Arkansas, and Rio Grande river basins toward the Atlantic Ocean. The Colorado River accounts for 25% of the stream flow leaving the state 11. The Colorado River's tributaries are: Gila River, Colorado River Aqueduct, Virgin River, Little River, San Juan River, and the Green River 12. The river is popular for all sorts of sports including rafting, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, fishing, tubing, wakeboarding and many more
