The barrel will be stamped "made in belgium" or "made in japan".
A 410 gauge, single barrel shotgun with Volunteer stamped on it and Serial number A981277 was made by the Volunteer Arms Company. They made guns for Belknap Hardware store in Louisville, Kentucky.
i have one of those too and it has the noris stamped on the stock too, but i have no idea who made it.
1924 - it will be date code stamped on the barrel.

They made 38,000 of them from 1930-1933, don't have serial to date on them but they were date code stamped on the barrel.
Probably made before 1968, inexpensive.
Many Remington firearms may be dated by the letter code stamped on the barrel. This combination of 2 or 3 letters is rather small, and is stamped on the barrel on the LEFT side, at the very rear of the barrel. You may need a magnifier and a bright light.
