The M1 was designed by John C. Garand at the Springfield Armory. Once the design was finalized, a contract to produce the rifle was awarded to Winchester.
After WWII, International Harvester Corporation and Harrington & Richardson produced the M1 until the mid-50's. Some rifles were license-produced in Denmark and Italy.
Presently, M1 rifles are made for the civilian market by Springfield Armory, Inc. of Geneseo, IL.
Production began in 1936, and ended in Italy in 1957.but it is still in use at army camps for at the shooting range
