There's no record in The Bible of this, but i reckon that it was just roughed up with a couple of tree branches, and nothing like the polished versions you see in the churches today; because in one passage the cross is referred to as a tree:
"The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree."
(Acts 5.30)
