A transatlantic cruise in the 1940s and 1950s would have been luxurious. The food and entertainment would have been top of the line and the service would have been tremendous.
It had the tendency to bring people together in social settings.

There really wasn't a 'transition', and radio is still around. TV began to spread to many large 'markets' in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
The computers that became available in the 1940s to early 1950s were far less reliable than those today. In addition to being slow, unreliable, expensive, and have very small memories, machines of that time were difficult to program due to lack of supporting software.
