The separation of powers in the U. S. Constitution is in the three branches of government. They are made up of executive, judiciary and the legislative with each having its unique role in the government.
The most significant modification they made to the doctrine of the separation of powers was to make it so the powers of each branch would overlap. This was done to create a system of checks and balances.
Separation of powers is what dividing the powers of government is called.
The way people are elected has no baring on the separation of powers.
The government would have become a tyranny if there was no separation of powers
So that one branch of government doesn't control every decision made.
