In the days of the real use of the Jesus fish, Christians wee being persecuted by the Romans. Because of this, they needed a way to know if another person was a Christian or not. So, the would draw half of the fish, a curved line, with a stick in the dirt and see what the other person did. If they drew the other line, that person knew the secret code and was most likely a Christian. So, the early Christians invented it as a way to protect themselves from Roman persecution.
