Country Gentlemen
A large percentage of the Whigs in the Northern states joined the new Republican party. The short-lived Constitutional Union party was the mostly made up of former Whigs from the South and remnants of the old Know-nothing party.
Many of the old Northern Whigs moved to the new Republican party. The Southern Whigs formed the Constitutional Union Party and became Democrats after the Civil war.
