Legend has it that Wing Chun, also often spelled Ving Tsun, was developed by a Buddist Abbess named Ng Mui and passed on to her disciple Yim Ving Tsun, whom the system is named after. The difference between Ving Tsun and Wing Chun is actually that the VT spelling usually denotes that the system is of Grand Master Ip Man's (also commonly spelled Yip Man) lineage. Ip Man is the noted and respected Grand Master who was Bruce Lee's sifu (kung fu teacher). Some other noted Ving Tsun Grand Masters are Moy Yat and Wong Shun Leung of more contemporary times and Leung Jan and Chan Wah Shuen of the more recent past
Wing Chun in Mandarin is Yong Chun(咏春).
