There was never a company with that name. It was a trade name on guns made by Crescent, Harrington & Richardson, and Stevens for distribution by Belknap Hardware Co. in St Louis. Absolutely correct. Do not confuse 'Essex Gun Works' with the current manufacturer 'Essex Arms' which is a maker of .45 pistol components and is also bringing back the Iver Johnson tradename.
The Crescent Gun Company made guns which were sold under assorted brand names back around the turn of the last century. "Essex", "Knickerbocker", "Lakeside", "American Gun Co."; an on-line search will turn up an amazing list of over a hundred names under which these low cost guns were marketed. In many cases local hardware stores contracted with Crescent to have a small run of guns stamped with their store name. Essentially, anyone who had the cash could have Crescent guns stamped with their own brand name. These were low budget guns of serviceable quality which have little to no collector value today.

Most likely, yes. Essex was a trade name used by Crescent-Davis firearms Co on shotguns made for the Belknap Hardware Co of Louisville KY back in the 18 and 1900's. The term "Hardware guns" is derived from the Crescent Co, as they made guns for just about anybody, and would put any name on the gun if you ordered 10 or more.
