The planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were named by the ancient Romans after their gods, following the custom of the Greeks of name the planets after their corresponding Gods. The name "Earth" originates from Middle English and was given to our world before it was recognized as a planet. Uranus was given its current name by German astronomer Johann Elert Bode. Neptune was named by French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier. Pluto, which is no longer considered a planet, was named by Venetia Burney, a schoolgirl who suggested the name to Pluto's discoverer, Percival Lowell.
