Erik the Red left Iceland because he was banished. He was banished because his two thralls destroyed Erik's neighbor's farm, and his neighbor was allowed to choose his thralls' punishment. He chose to kill them. Erik was so mad, that he killed his neighbor. He was banished from Iceland for three years. So he sailed west and found Greenland. Like father like son. Erik was in Iceland because his father was banished from Norway because his father was convicted of manslaughter.
Greenland is a misnomer because it's a name of a land but it's not green at all. It's actually white. During the Viking period, Erik the Red named Greenland hoping it'll trick settlers coming over. The trick worked because they thought the land was green with no air pollution and it's a quiet park as they looked at the map, but when they got there, they froze to death.

Erik the reds parents left Norway due to manslaughter along with him, the family settled in Hornstrandir in west Iceland. The Icelanders later sentenced Erik to a three year exile for several murders around the year 982. As he was exiled he set sail west and found a new land "Greenland". After marring Thorild he moved to Haukadal (Hawksdale) where he built a farm. When his slaves started a landslide on the neighbouring farm Valthjof. Valthjof's friend, Eyiolf, killed the slaves. When Thorget borrowed a shovel from Erik and refused to return it Erik stool the shovel back and in a later case killed Thorget. The second case happened when Erik wanted revenge on Valthjof for killing his slaves when they 'accidently started a land slide.' Valthjof murderously punished the slaves. Erik didn't take this kindly and so he killed Valthjof. The Icelanders eventually convicted Erik for these murders and banished him from Iceland. This event lead Erik to a group of followers to travel the lands nearly 500 miles away.
