The actual name was Flavian amphitheatre (Amphitheatrum Flavium). Amphitheatre is the name for arenas like this. It was called Flavian because the emperors involved in this project were the emperors of the Flavian dynasty.
The name Colosseum has long been believed to be derived from a colossal statue of Nero located between the amphitheatre and the nearby Temple of Venus and Roma which was named after the Colossus of Rhodes. It was not probably used by the Romans. By the year 1000 this name had been coined to refer to the amphitheatre. The statue itself was largely forgotten and only its base survives.
The emperor Titus dedicated and opened the Colosseum in 80 AD.
Yankee Stadium opened first. Yankee Stadium opened on April 18, 1923 and the Los Angeles Coliseum opened on May 1, 1923.
