The original "Dumbo" character appeared in the 1941 children's movie of the same name. The character's name was actually "Jumbo Jr." but in the movie, but other characters make fun of Jumbo Jr. because he has huge ears. They nickname him "Dumbo" because of how he looks. But, his huge ears hide a wonderful talent--- he can flap his great big ears and fly! His only friend throughout the movie is a tiny mouse named Timothy. Timothy and Jumbo Jr's mother both believe in Jumbo and think he is terrific just the way he is, but Jumbo lives through a lot of humiliation every time anyone calls him "Dumbo".
This Walt Disney movie was later made into book form. The movie and book taught many children the negative power of calling other people hurtful names and helped many bullied children understand that physical differences are not things to be ashamed of in life.
