Who or what was a charybdris?

Charybdis was a nymph before turning into what she was. For some reason she did something horrendous and was turned into a whirlpool. She and her sister were in this business Scylla was also a nymph but got punished and became a headed monster. But they got so frustrated that whenever a ship came you had no where to go because you would either get eaten by Scylla of drown by Charybdis. The only to that made it through them was Odysseus and i think Jason.
